Employee Role In Blended Learning

Article excerpt - How Blended Learning Changes What We Do

By Allison Rossett

Blended learning moves responsibility for learning from the instructor to the employee. For many, this is not an easy transition. They like what they know—classroom experiences led by instructors—and can be uncomfortable and not particularly adept at learning more independently and online. According to Brown (2001), "An important finding in the education literature is that many students given control over their own learning choose to terminate the experience before mastering the training task." In a proprietary study conducted for a large government organization, we found that executives were most favorably disposed to blending. The employees, however, were less so.

Training Department knows that the creation of e-courseware is not the final solution most companies are looking for. We are confident that employee training and development programs can be more effective if blending learning is part of the employee training plan and an understanding of the employee training needs are addressed. We support our clients with resources about employee training and development in our course library and document library. Our student administration section provides a variety of communication opportunities - we do not want the students to feel alone with this independent employee training software.

Some questions to think about:

  • Are employees ready for blended learning?
  • Are you eager to know more about this topic? Is this top-of-mind?
  • Do you know how to go about learning and reference on your own?
  • Do you know how this new approach will affect what you do at work?
  • Do you know how to navigate the technology?
  • Are you ready to assess your skills and knowledge and to make choices based on skill gaps?
  • Do you seek more responsibility for your own learning and development?
  • Do you like to talk and read about ways of doing your job better?
  • Do you know how to manage time and distractions?
  • Do you know what might get in your way and have ideas about how to mitigate obstacles?
  • Do you know your unit’s priorities and how development in this area relates to those priorities?
  • Do your supervisors support this continuous growth?
  • Are you willing to seek help from a supervisor, peer or, mentor? (Adapted from Rossett & Schafer, 2003)

Understanding individual learning methods, access and understanding of technology and time management can all be addressed in employee training and development programs. We recommend incorporating blended learning techniques with our online employee training software as researching employee training articles & plans.
